5 things to consider in choosing your next Smartphone

Image result for Smartphone
A Smartphone is not just any type of phone. It consists of two words,  joined together - Smart and Phone. The word " Smart" makes it an advanced type of phone with a mobile operating system but functions like a handheld personal computer. Before you buy a new phone, you need a know if its not a feature phone you want.

A feature Phone on the other hand is just slightly different from a basic mobile phone, it uses a proprietary custom-designed software and user interface, and lack the capabilities of a Smartphone. It provides voice calling, text messaging, in addition to basic multimedia, physical backliights, buttons and Internet capabilities, and other services offered by the user's wireless service provider. A typical example of a feature phone is the Nokia 130.

However, if you have decided to buy a Smartphone, there are some factors needed to be put into consideration before investing your money on a Smartphone. Below are the things to consider:

1. Mobile Carriers and Brands

There are different mobile carriers with different features to offer. Before you buy Smartphone either offline or online with your credit card, you should take your time
to choose the best mobile phone provider. Among the popular mobile carriers are T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.

Also, there many different smartphone brands with amazing features to offer. Among popular phone brands are Apple, Samsung, Google, Sony, Nokia and so on.

2. Operating System

Currently, there are three popular operating systems - iOS from Apple, Android from Google and Windows Phone Operating System from Microsoft.

The most widely used operating system is Android. Why? - with Android OS you can customize and configure your device user-interface as you like with different variety of design but with Apple iOS and Windows OS you have minimal customization and configuration over your user-interface.

If the user-interface matters to you, I recommend going for Android OS of version not later than 7.0 which is Nougat, because now there is Android 8.0 Oreo and even Android P. But if you would like to stay with iOS, go for iphone devices of at least iphone 6 models.

3. Internal Storage Space

Before buying a smartphone, you need to check the ROM and RAM. Buying a smartphone of 16 GB internal storage means you only have 10 GB free space to use, pre-installed apps on your device takes 6 GB.

Although the internal storage can be expandable on Android phone with the use of MicroSD card but it has a limit so internal storage is the best.

Also, before you decide on internal storage model, consider how much internal storage you will need. Now, there are smartphones with 32GB internal stoarage, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB even 512GB. If you are the type that loves saving music, movies, file and heavy applications, go for phone models with higher internal storage, if no, you can just stay with 32GB internal storage.

Similarly, the RAM factor should also be considered. There are also 2GB, 3GB, 4GB, 6GB, and 8GB RAM smartphone models. For the best smarphone experience, it is advisable to buy a device of at least 2GB RAM with 16GB/32GB ROM. A less memory storage will result to lagging experience.

4. Battery

Even with latest OS and large internal storage on your device, if your the phone doesn't have a good battery capacity, the smartphone phone is just useless. Now, there are screen with high resolutions that takes more energy. So before choosing a new smartphone, you should carefully consider the battery capacity, endurance rating and the time it take to completely Charge - with new smartphones coming with Fast Charge technology of Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0, 3.0 and even 4.0.

Although, high battery capacity doesn't guarantee a longer battery life. The best thing to do is to check reviews and benchmark results in the market to know how the device works. Sometimes, you can get some clue about the smartphone from some e-commerce online shopping review tab.

The best battery capacity ranges from 3000 mAh to 5000 mAh.

5. Cost

Another factor you need to consider in choosing your next smartphone is whether the phone is worth the price tag. You won't want to invest your money on a smartphone you will regret buying later so don't choose low cost over quality.
Also, remember you might use the phone for more than a year - you won't want to buy a phone you will get tired of in 6 months.

Conclusion

Apart from the factors listed above, you can also consider the following features when buying your next smartphone;
  • Processor (Apple A11, Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, Huawei Kirin 970, MediaTek Helio X30, and Samsung Exynos 8895
  • NFC
  • Qi Wireless Charging Technology
  • Fast Charging Technology (Quick Charge 3.0/4.0/5.0)
