Newcastle’s most spectacular walk, The Memorial Walk is a great way to exercise whilst soaking up breathtaking views.

Depending on what day of the week you’re visiting, you may be lucky enough to chance upon the Olive Tree Markets for a gathering of Newcastle’s best designers, artists, makers and food trucks. Sit back, enjoy live music and the market vibes.

Wander down Darby Street to see what takes your fancy: The Autumn Rooms, Turkish iced tea at Baba Yaga or artistic dishes almost too good to eat at Core Espresso. Browse Pushing Pansies, High Tea with Mrs Woo, Betty Mim and Blackbird Corner for eclectic fashion, local art and quirky collectibles.
Keen for a picnic? Pork Ewe Deli have all the ingredients for an indulgent charcuterie platter to take to a nearby park: choose between the leafy Centennial Park or King Edward Park for vast ocean views.
For sourdough, flaky buttery pies, gourmet sausage rolls and other baked goodies, you can’t go past Baked Uprising at Maryville. Be prepared, on weekends there’s usually a line out the door but it’s worth the wait.
Newcastle West is a hot spot for cafes and restaurants: try Sherwood Coffee Bar on Parry Street for awesome toasties and delicious coffee. Antojitos’ authentic Mexican street food is packed full of flavour, and pop in to Bao Brothers Urban Eatery for your bao fix.
Spend an afternoon watching the bulk carriers move in and out of the harbour from Honeysuckle, sipping cocktails at Moneypenny, or Japanese craft beers at Nagisa.
Treat yourself to an Italian trattoria dinner at cosy Una Volta, or mouthwatering tapas at Basement on Market Street. Afterward, head to Babylon on King Street, a magnificent 1920’s inspired restaurant and bar with an impressive whisky selection.
For some serious cocktails, see if you can find speakeasy, Coal and Cedar on Hunter Street.
Where to stay?
There are plenty of hotels to choose from in Newcastle, from budget to luxury, and beachside to inner city.
With Rydges, Ibis, Novotel, Noahs and two Quest hotels, just to name a few, finding accommodation shouldn’t be an issue.
The latest hotel to open its doors is Holiday Inn Express, which is located in Newcastle West.
